FACEBOOK AND TWITTER AS  TOOLS FOR RE-ESTABLISHING DEMOCRACY IN INDIA

"Journalism is what maintains democracy. It's the force for progressive social change."

-Andrew Vachss

Journalism is undergoing a significant period of change, affecting 'almost every aspect of the production, reporting and reception of news' (Franklin)

Facebook and Twitter are the dominant social media platforms in news communication, although others, such as Instagram, are also being utilized. (Bowd) This presentation aims to begin the process of understanding and examining the present state of freedom of expression and its value in social media journalism. It furthermore examines the role of social media in democracy. It also analyses the role of Facebook and Twitter in political development, namely in the promotion and re-establishment of democracy. As the normal media somehow have failed to question the existing democratic power and its structure of propaganda, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are more liberal and control free, so it analyses how these platforms are regarded as a public sphere and how they consequently facilitate democratic development in a country like India.
