DIARY AS A POSTMODERN DEVICE

IN

‘THE SENSE OF AN ENDING’

Postmodernity is certain of its uncertainty. (Butler) In October 2011, the novel ‘The Sense of an Ending’ by Barnes was awarded the Man Booker Prize.

This presentation aims to analyse one of the major symbolic devices of the text ‘The Sense of an Ending’ from a postmodernist lens. It deals with the aspects of postmodernism that assists in equating similarity to the language of Julian Barnes in this selected text.  The language, unreliability in narration, fragmentation, allusions, intertextuality and various other means are observed to prove the text as a postmodern narrative. Among these, the diary plays a vital role as a mainstay in driving the plot. This presentation attempts to prove the literary device 'diary' a bright example of postmodernism.
