Understanding and Skimming the Text

 Introduction

            Reading does not mean reading every word with equal attention. A good reader first tries to understand the general meaning or gist of a text and then reads it carefully for details. Skimming is one of the important techniques that helps a reader quickly understand the general content of a text. The textbook emphasizes that “How we are reading a text is as important as what we are reading.” Skimming and scanning can help a reader get the gist of a text and improve reading comprehension.

 1. Meaning of Understanding a Text

        Understanding a text means grasping its main idea, purpose, important points, and overall message. A reader should not concentrate only on individual words but should understand how different ideas are connected.

        A well-written paragraph generally contains a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding or linking sentence. The topic sentence gives the central idea, while the supporting sentences provide explanations, arguments, examples, and evidence. Therefore, identifying the topic sentence and supporting ideas helps the reader understand the text.

        Understanding a text also requires attention to the writer's purpose. The reader should ask whether the writer wants to inform, describe, explain, instruct, or persuade the reader.

 2. Meaning of Skimming 

Skimming is a quick reading technique used to get the general idea or gist of a text without reading every detail.

        When skimming, the reader reads quickly and does not stop to study every sentence. The purpose is to obtain an overall picture of the text. The textbook recommends previewing a text before reading it in detail.

        For example, when we open a newspaper article, we may quickly read its title, headings, first sentences, and important words to understand what the article is about. We do not read every line carefully at this stage.

 3. What to Look for While Skimming
 

        While skimming a text, a reader should try to identify four important things:

• Audience – Who is the text written for?
• Type of text – Is it a report, article, letter, advertisement, etc.?
• Purpose of the writer – Is the writer trying to describe, inform, explain, instruct, or persuade?
• General content – What is the text mainly about?

These are specifically suggested in the textbook as things to understand while skimming.

4. Skimming and Understanding the Gist 

        The main purpose of skimming is to understand the gist of the text. Gist means the general or central meaning of something.

           For example, suppose an article discusses the effects of excessive use of mobile phones among students. By reading its title, headings, opening sentences, and important words, we may understand that the article is mainly about the positive or negative effects of mobile-phone use on students. We do not need to understand every detail to identify its gist.

        The textbook states that skimming and scanning can help the reader “get its gist.”

5. Skimming as the First Stage of Reading

    Skimming is generally a preliminary stage of reading. After skimming, the reader can decide which parts require detailed attention.

The process can therefore be understood as:

Skim → Understand the general idea → Identify important areas → Read carefully → Find details

        Meenakshi Raman and Sangeeta Sharma suggests that after skimming, the reader can move to a slower and more careful reading in order to find specific information. This more detailed search is called scanning.

        Thus, skimming saves time and prepares the reader for detailed reading.

6. Importance of Skimming and Understanding

        Understanding and skimming are useful because they:

• help the reader understand the main idea quickly;
• save time and effort;
• improve reading speed and efficiency;
• help the reader understand the organization and purpose of a text;
• improve attention and concentration; and
• prepare the reader for detailed reading and comprehension.

        The textbook connects these reading strategies with better understanding of content, better understanding of how information is organized, improved concentration, active reading, critical thinking, and better recall of information.

 Conclusion 

        Understanding and skimming are important reading skills. Understanding helps the reader grasp the meaning, main idea, purpose, and organization of a text, while skimming helps the reader obtain this general understanding quickly. A reader should first preview and skim a text, identify its audience, type, purpose, and general content, and then read it carefully when specific information is required. Therefore, skimming is an effective first step towards quick, purposeful, and efficient reading comprehension.
