Indian Poetics - What it is?

Introduction

Indian Poetics is one of the oldest and richest traditions of literary criticism in the world. Ancient Indian scholars devoted great attention to understanding the nature, purpose, beauty, and effect of literature. They developed systematic theories to explain how literary works create meaning, beauty, emotion, and pleasure.

According to M.S. Kushawaha and Sanjayakumar Mishra, for a long time Sanskrit was the main language of learned discussion in India, and therefore most important literary theories were written in Sanskrit.

Kāvya-Śāstra

Indian Poetics is the scientific study of literature and literary beauty according to Indian literary thinkers.

  • The Sanskrit word for literature is Kāvya.
  • The Sanskrit word Śāstra means systematic knowledge or science.

Therefore,

Indian Poetics = Scientific Study of Literature (Kāvya-Śāstra)

During ancient times:

📍 Sanskrit was the language of scholars.

📍 Writers from different regions wrote literary and critical works in Sanskrit.

📍 Sanskrit literary theories circulated throughout India.

📍 No other regional language achieved such pan-Indian influence in literary criticism.

Therefore, Sanskrit Poetics came to be known as Indian Poetics.

What Is Kāvya?

The word Kāvya is usually translated as "Poetry". However, Indian scholars used the term in a much wider sense.

Kāvya includes Poetry, Drama, Stories, Epics, Prose Works, Literary Compositions. Thus, Kāvya means 'Literature' and not merely poetry.

Classification of Kāvya

Indian scholars divided Kāvya into two major categories.

1. Śravya Kāvya (Audible Literature)

Literature that is heard or read.

Examples:
  • Poems
  • Epics
  • Short stories
  • Prose writings
The reader experiences the work through reading or listening.

2. Dṛśya Kāvya (Visible Literature)

Literature that is seen or performed.

Examples:
  • Drama
  • Theatre
  • Stage Performances
In Sanskrit tradition it is called:
Nāṭya
The audience experiences it through performance.

Literature as a Science

Ancient Indian thinkers believed that literature should not only be enjoyed but also studied systematically. Therefore, they treated poetics as a science.

Questions they asked included:

● What makes poetry beautiful?
● Why does literature affect readers?
● How are emotions created?
● What distinguishes great literature from ordinary writing?

These questions gave rise to Indian literary theories.

Alankāra Śāstra and Nāṭya Śāstra

Indian literary studies developed into two major branches.

Alankāra Śāstra

Focuses on:
  • Poetry
  • Language
  • Literary Beauty
  • Figures of Speech
It is mainly concerned with Śravya Kāvya

Nāṭya Śāstra

Focuses on:
  • Drama
  • Acting
  • Performance
  • Theatre
It is mainly concerned with Dṛśya Kāvya

Difference Between Indian Poetics and Indian Aesthetics

Indian Poetics and Indian Aesthetics are related, but they are not exactly the same. Indian Poetics is the study of literature, especially poetry and other literary works. It explains how literature creates beauty, meaning, and emotions in readers. Therefore, it focuses only on literary compositions.

Indian Aesthetics, on the other hand, is a broader subject. It studies beauty and artistic experience in all forms of art, such as music, dance, painting, sculpture, architecture, and literature. While Indian Poetics deals only with literature, Indian Aesthetics deals with all kinds of arts.

Therefore, Indian Poetics is a part of Indian Aesthetics. Indian Poetics is narrower in scope, whereas Indian Aesthetics is broader because it includes all art forms.

Indian Poetics = Study of Literature 📖

Indian Aesthetics = Study of Beauty in All Arts 🎭🎵🎨🗿📖

Conclusion:

To conclude, Indian Poetics is the ancient Indian tradition of studying literature scientifically and artistically. It explains literature not only as language but as a source of beauty, emotion, and meaning. Therefore, Indian Poetics helps us understand literature in a deeper and more systematic way.
