 Welcome readers,

The essay "The Function of Criticism at the Present Time" was published by Matthew Arnold in his first collection of critical writing ‘Essays in Criticism’ in 1865. The essay deals with Arnold’s interpretation of criticism and his critique of writers who write politically or religiously biased literature thus narrowing its scope.

Arnold argues that criticism is more important and powerful than previously believed, and is a vital component of allowing creativity to flourish within a society. He defines criticism as:

“A disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought of in the world, and thus to establish a current of true and fresh ideas.”

He also criticizes contemporary critics for being too partisan, dogmatic, and superficial, and for neglecting the study of the past and foreign literature. He advocates for a more comparative, historical, and universal approach to criticism, which would help to create a common culture and a sense of harmony among people.

Some of the main points of the essay are:

  • Criticism should be free from personal or political bias and should aim at finding the truth.

  • Criticism should not be subservient to the practical needs or interests of society but should foster a spirit of curiosity and inquiry.

  • Criticism should not be confined to one nation or one period but should explore the best that is known and thought in the world, past and present.

  • Criticism should not be dogmatic or authoritative but should be open-minded and tolerant of different opinions and perspectives.

  • Criticism should not be superficial or mechanical but should be creative and original.

  • Criticism should not be isolated or elitist but should communicate with the public and create a current of fresh and true ideas.
