Welcome Readers,
Literature doesn't always give the readers, comfort and cosy zone, not always provide didactic lessons, even some stories don't carry a happy ending which soothes the mind with a feeling relaxation but literature is also about sensation- some pleasant some unpleasant. Sometimes, literature acts as a filter with presents the monochromatic sensation of horrifying terror. The beauty of literature also lies in its ability to present the mental instability and emotional crisis of a human being.
Literature allows us to ponder upon certain ideas and concepts which have been considered as 'forbidden' and short stories, in particular, can provide this mental brooding in just one sitting!
American author Edgar Allan Poe certainly has achieved a 'unity of effect' in his writing. The reading of his short stories lefts a deep sense of terror and strange amazement in the minds of the readers. It deeply moves the readers from within, marking an effect on their emotions. Poe's short stories generally have a bizarre world full of terror and horror with the themes of love, grief and guilt result from violence with a spoon full of mystery.
With reference to Poe's short stories, this blog is assigned as a Pre-thinking activity by Dr Jay Mehta Sir (click here to navigate to Sir's blog) to think and ponder upon these points and prepare a reflective blog on it:
Explore AUTHENTIC print, electronic and social media, filter through various incidents that have happened in the last 06 months or so.
Here is the news articles I found-

Give it a read here in detail by clicking on the link belowCannibal killer ate ex-girlfriend's brain after brutally stabbing her to death
- Narrow down your focus to the news headlines of horrible, gruesome and shocking crime stories. (murder, suicide, brutal violence, perversity, terrorism, domestic conflicts, animal abuse and so on).
- Note down your first impressions while they met your eyes. What thoughts they generated in you? What possible abyss of human mind did you observe that you can even try to fathom?
- Honestly, by reading these headlines and the descriptions written in these articles, I was very much suffocated at first. I felt numb and blank as if someone has closed me in a coffin and I am really struggling to breathe hard. This was the immediate reaction of mine, then by reading more and more, I was deeply wounded with the horrors of cannibalism of the man (mentioned in the above news).
- Why would people have this kind of thoughts?
- What acts, matters, issues, experiences, deeds, would have urged the culprits to possess such terrifying thoughts and where have their rational mind stopped and they have been swayed by their tormenting thoughts?
- It is said that 'empty mind is devil's workshop', had this brutal cruelty has anything to do with the idle brain and the arising situation where the person has nothing to do so he/she naturally becomes lazy and so his/ her vacant mind leads to such a terribly scornful and villainous/ inhuman act?
- Or is it their anger or frustration which had overpowered their and occupied their rational mind?
- What satisfaction can one gain after murdering someone, or by suppressing another human being?
- What kind of trauma one is going through that it occupied his/her mind in such a way that only one solution he'she finds - "Suicide". Is it the fear that no one can find his/her situation relatable? or Is it the fact that none will understand the struggle?
- Is it the depression that leads to such a tragic end of oneself?
- Normally. when people even witness a murder scene, they generally find it uncomfortable to even get back to normal life for 5-6 days, sometimes the scene haunts them and they may also have sleepless nights, but Can this kind of brutal murder of anyone give any satisfaction? Or can it even result in any comfort of someone's absence?
- This may be a reaction of the suppressed feelings of an individual which incite or encourage them to act brutally or cause someone's murder. (someone- the person whom they found constantly ruling over their thoughts)
Amazing Blog...!!!! Quite interesting examples and arguments. So far as empty mind's devil's workshop point is concerned, I would say that the scariest part in it is to FACE ONE'S OWN SELF. One can face anyone in the world but one cannot mostly face oneself and especially when something disastrous is boiling within him/her, loneliness would just add fuel to the fire. Last few months of lockdown has been such a phase for many individuals. Literature helps us understand current scenario better. It would be even more fruitful if you could analyze significance of poe's stories in light of aforementioned current happenings. Keep reading and keep writing...!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dr Jay Sir for your insightful discussion in online class and for commenting on the blog. I got a very new perspective to look at the prisoner's psychology. I agree with your point that sometimes it becomes hard to face one's own self especially when the some highly inhuman thoughts are battling in the individuals mind. and yes, we have witnessed certain cases in lockdown.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely update my blog by connecting all my points with the reference of Poe's short stories. Because as you said, it is a common practice to connect our learning of the literary texts with the recent happenings of the world which help in reading things with clarity.
Thank you, Sir.
